In addition shields take power, while Plating requires none, so you can get more Plating than Shields. I love my Crystal Infused Plating If I need to clear a system of monsters for colonizing or resources, I just throw corvettes at 'em until they die. The smaller monster groups might kill one or two in a group of a dozen, but that's an acceptable loss in most cases. Even the most basic corvettes can defeat monsters in equal or better strength numbers.
