I don't believe I use buffers except w/ black powder. Member: Orange Gunsite Family, NRA-Life, the American Legion, and 50-year LEO w/ a 45ACP 1911. All my 1911s are in .45ACP & 10mm. As near as I can determine, H/IMR 4198 are considered the most efficient powders to use in high-end lever action handloads for 45-70 and 350-405-grain bullets. IMR 3031 is slightly slower burning powder than the 4198s. In .45-caliber lever actions I think this means it is better suited for: slightly larger powder capacity per bullet weight ...About 24-25 grains of 2400 powder approximates the original black powder velocities with a 400 grain bullet. I like 11 grains of Unique behind a 500 gr Lee boolit, my crony says 1100+FPS. Great load in my Sharps and my Pedesorli Rem. Feb 11, 2009 · EsoxLucius. Accurate 1680 is very similar to the 4198s and Reloder 7 being on the "fast" side of powders for the 45-70. According burn rate charts, some have Accurate 1680 closer to the 4227s than the 4198s, while others have it closer to the 4198s than the 4227s. There is no reason why it wouldn't produce impressive velocities in the 45-70 ... Its a great powder VERY versatile. It is made for a specific reason its a BULKY powder, initially perfect for SASS type shoots where folks wanted light loads in large cases like 44/40 & 45 Colt. But Versatile because its a full pressure powder, but one that offers lower velocities perfect for soft lead bullet loads. ANY straight case can use it.

You can use many other powders for reduced loads, milder recoil, and great accuracy. Trail Boss didn't even come close to being the best powder in the 45-70 for accuracy, and recoil with other powders is very, very mild if loaded right. Heck, I even looked in my Hodgdon manual and could find no loadings using H110 for the 45-70. The .454 Casull had a load of 28.5 gr of H110 for a 300 gr JFP bullet, but showing 44.2K of pressure. If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it. Personally I would not use Lil-gun in my 45-70.
