This has been happening on my 2017 Chevy Malibu for a few weeks. It started out by rarely happening. I could get the message to go off by either touching or lightly pressing the gear-shift release button or by cycling through the gears and then shifting back to park and shutting off the engine.

You won't really even need to disconnect the wires but may make it a bit easier. Anyway there's a small snap-on cover for the micro switch.
