Apr 1, 2022 · John Deere 318 (M00318X222437) w/ Onan (Model Spec No. B43G - GA018/4060B, Serial No H823622911). Plowing snow for a couple hours in Jan. Running great and working hard, then it just died sounding like it ran out of gas. Gave it a spray of starter fluid (the kind with lube in it). Would start to start up, but not quite & then die. Dec 9, 2005 · Connect voltmeter red lead to negative (-) coil terminal (A) and black lead to engine ground. Turn key switch to RUN position. Turn flywheel slowly by hand. Voltage should fluctuate back and forth between battery voltage and 1 - 1.5 volts. Results: VOLTAGE DOES NOT SWITCH: Replace Ignition control module. Since the machine stopped mowing first, then wouldn't start, that switch may be the culprit. Also, sparks at the battery mean a bad connection there or a dead short! Cleaned off the pickup on the flywheel, ran a new lead from trigger unit to coil, and tractor fired right up. Shut it off, let sit a minute, fired right back up. Let itnsit 10 minutes and now no spark again. It is not the ignition switch as I have the coil wired directly to the trigger unit for testing.

New coil from John Deere is over $120.00 so, am looking for suggestions if there is an alternative coil that can be used.

Pulling both plugs out of the engine allows the starter to crank it faster as well, you should see spark under those conditions. Let us know what you find. On the 316, you may have a blown F2 fuse keeping the PTO from working so check that...
