I've never had a 318, but following posts here, I'd say any where between 1500 and 2500 is the engines' lifespan, so I'd rebuild! Charging issue: Stator when disconnected from regulator should produce 30-40 ACVolts. I did my 318 with the 18 HP B&S from SEW about 5 years ago. It is awesome. My only regret is that I didn't put in the 23 HP B&S engine. The 18 has more power than the Onan did, but with the mulch kit on my 48" replacement deck - I wish I had a few extra HP.
