Spikes honestly are fine and my number 2 choice in slot, just require a slightly higher level of accuracy. They especially excel in extra dmg against shielded combatants. Inconsistency is baked into destiny 2 because of netcode. HGL shots just, kinda occasionally fail to 1hko a % of the time. Ymmv.
