Yes a 800mm f5.6 + TC is doable. Actually, I was wondering about getting to 800mm f/5.6 by using the 2x TC on the upcoming 400mm f/2.8. In other words, put a 2x TC on and not use the internal 1.4x. My thinking is the additional length of the optical path that exists for the internal TC might preclude the usage of traditional TCs.
