If you're primarily going support, you could just go single class, as that will allow you to get more powerful chants and invocations sooner. However, if you're looking to multiclass, mixing Chanter with Paladin or Ranger could be very helpful. Heralds (Chanter/Paladin) don't have to fight in melee.

One does more damage per hit, one does slightly more damage per second. 2handed is fully viable, and depending on your party composition can even be advantageous.
